A Senior's Experience Volunteering

By Betty Faulkner

For Highland Valley Elder Services

I took an early retirement from my job as a secretary in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts after working there for 37 years. Since I was involved with so many people in my job, I decided that I would enjoy using my extra time to volunteer. I had seen an article calling for volunteers at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, so I spoke with the Volunteer Coordinator there. There were many positions open and because I also wanted to get exercise, I decided that the best position for me was delivering mail throughout the hospital. I have enjoyed this position as I always meet friendly people throughout the hospital.

I wanted to do more with my time, however so when I heard about the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Hampshire & Franklin Counties through the newspaper, I made an appointment with the Director. Because I had previously done office work, she matched me with a secretarial position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service. I stayed with them for three years but when they hired additional secretarial staff, I left my volunteer position.

While I was at the RSVP office one day, the Director asked me if I would be interested in teaching a strength training class to people who have Osteoporosis. I said "yes" and a few months later, I was trained to lead the class at the Hadley Council on Aging. I have been with them for five years now. I enjoy teaching this class as I have seen the participants grow stronger and we have a good bond between all of us.

In addition to teaching the Osteoporosis class, I also deliver Meals on Wheels to several elders in Hadley. This is an important job because not only do I help these individuals get a balanced meal, but I also serve as a check-in to make sure they are all right. Some days the people I visit with want to talk more than others, and I enjoy listening. I am also active in my community through being a Board member for both the Hadley Council on Aging and Highland Valley Elder Services. It has been through these positions that I have learned more about how the Council on Aging and the programs of Highland Valley Elder Services help elders in our community.

I have gotten a lot out of being an RSVP volunteer and have learned more about many of the agencies that RSVP serves in the community. Through my involvement, I have learned more about many of the agencies that RSVP serves in the community while also learning firsthand how important volunteers are in keeping community programs alive. Also, by participating in RSVP's special projects, I have made new acquaintances and friends.

RSVP is very important to our community. A program of the Hampshire Council of Governments, RSVP is the area's largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over. RSVP partners with more than 70 area non-profit and public organizations to provide a full range of opportunities for people to serve. RSVP Volunteers work to combat hunger, help children excel in school, improve elder health, protect our environment and strengthen our communities in many ways. There are many positions available for all skills. By joining RSVP, you will come to know many nice people while providing services to several agencies in this area. When getting older, it is important to keep your mind active and your body moving.

If you would like more information about RSVP or would like to lean how you can become a volunteer, please call the office at 413-584-1300, extension 8 where they will match you with an opportunity that fits your skills, interests, and schedule.
