Catherine...

A Diligent Advocate

By Elizabeth Haire

For Highland Valley Elder Services

Imagine being motivated on a daily basis by a drive to make the world a better place. It is this drive that inspires Catherine in her position as Ombudsman for Highland Valley Elder Services. It is in this role that Catherine advocates for seniors living in nursing homes. In addition to ensuring that the rights of these individuals are upheld and respected, Catherine also helps to facilitate and implement changes that the residents request.

Catherine joined the Ombudsman program over two years ago after visiting a local rehab facility and witnessing an Ombudsman advocating on behalf of one of the residents. This experience gave her insight into this important role and motivated her to get involved herself. "Through my work with Highland Valley as an ombudsman volunteer, "Catherine explained, "I have helped seniors from all walks of life. I truly value these relationships." Catherine deeply appreciates her relationship with the Ombudsman Program Director. "JM Sorrell is inspiring. She has taught me a great deal and encourages me everyday."

The Ombudsman program monitors nursing homes to ensure that individuals' rights are supported. Ombudsmen visit these facilities regularly and speak with residents confidentially to resolve concerns and to answer questions. Ombudsmen volunteers also serve as community educators by promoting awareness about people's rights in long-term care facilities.

Catherine's role as an Ombudsman greatly impacts her life and the world around her. "Doing this work provides a great structure for the inclination to help people. You know you’re making a positive difference when you're impacting the lives of elders." It is her hope that, especially in these difficult times, more people will choose to take charge of their lives and communities and volunteer in some way. "We need more people who are altruistic and do not require compensation other than seeing that a person is taken care of in an honest manner."
